5 August 2003Things did not look good for the Academy's softball season finale as the team faced off against their toughest rivals, the Philadelphia Zoo. Two of the Academy's star players, home-run leader Jamie Carr (PCER) and golden-glove shortstop Mike Littmann (CSBE) were out. Angry skies had dumped rain on Edgley #7 all afternoon, transforming it into a temporary wetland. The game was forced to an alternate fieldone slightly less muddy, yet still treacherously slick. But the team's captain, "Butterfly" Mike Sikorski (Living Exhibits), remained optimistic. He knew his team was hungry for their 3rd win of the season after last week's heartbreakera one-run loss to the Board of Education. |
The visiting Zoo opened strong with 5 solid runs in the first 3 innings. The Academy scored its first run in the bottom of the 3rd on a solo homer by starting pitcher Robert Witmer (PCER, fig. left). After the Zoo added 2 runs in the 4th, the Academy bats came alive, slugging in 4 runs to tighten the score 75. The Zoo answered with runs in the 5th and 6th. But the Academy remained close, scoring a run in the 5th with hits by Jonathan Fingerut (PCER) and Frank Acker (PCER), and 2 runs in the 6th with hits by Mike Minko (Accounting) and rookie Joe Seggio (REU student). As the game entered the final inning, the score stood 98 Zoo. |
The Zoo padded their lead in the top of the 7th with 3 runs off veteran reliever Frank Acker. The Academy was down to their last at bats of the season. After one out, Frank Acker belted a single to center. Follow-up singles by Nate Saxe (PCER) and Mark Sabaj (CSBE) loaded the bases. Next up to the plate stepped the Brooklyn Bomber, sluggin' Joe Seggio (fig. right). The Zoo outfielders played deep, but not deep enough. Joe pounded a frozen rope over the left-fielder's head. As the Zoo scrambled to corral the long ball, Joe crossed the plate with a grand slam home run. The score was now tied at 12. |

Mike Minko smashed a line drive to the 3rd baseman for the second out. Key singles by John Keklak (Jefferson Hospital, ANSP consultant) and Mike Sikorski advanced a runner to scoring position. Then, as the sun began to set, an ominous fog crept over Fairmont Park |
Down to the final out, all eyes focused on the Academy's secret powerhouse, diatom expert Erin Hagan (PCER, fig. right). Anticipating a short pop fly, the Zoo outfielders shaded in a foolish calculation they would soon regret. Erin launched a rocket that sailed over the out-stretched glove of a diving outfielder, batting home the game's winning run. Academy 13Zoo 12. |

For their seventh-inning heroics, Joe and Erin were both awarded the Cracker Jack Prize of the game. |
